devadasi以前是庙妓（唱歌弹琴跳古典舞等才艺、达官贵人小老婆人选、地位较高），后来成为穷人和贱民阶层为了不付嫁妆反倒能赚一笔的卖女儿为妓女的借口。1988年起已非法，但直到现在仍有几万女性深陷此业。有些穷人家一家几代都是：从小卖身养全家及供兄弟读书，老了无家可归沿街乞讨，艾滋病死亦不少
